  • Avanti dash bulbs

can someone tell me what bulbs are used where in an Avanti dash? I don't have a shop manual but am supposed to be putting the dash together on JDP's Avanti this weekend... I know most are 53s or 57s, are the 57s used in all the gauges and then the 53s elsewhere? Any other bulbs used? I think the turn signal indicators are 1816s, or at least that's what I found in them when I took the old harness apart.

Or, if someone can just scan and email me that one page, that'd be splendid too...

    thanks

    From the Avanti owners manual...

    cigar lighter............1445
    clock........................57R (R for red)
    dome lights.............1004
    glove box...................57
    directional...............1445
    instruments...............57R
    ignition switch.........1445
    map light................1004
    radio......................1891
    o/h switch cluster....1445R
    high beam indicator.1445
    auto trans & console1445R
    vacuum gauge.........57R

You can go to store like Pep Boys and buy red gel caps to slide over standard (non-red) bulbs rather than find red bulbs.

Several of the Studebaker parts vendors have the correct red bulbs in stock. 1816 bulbs are way too bright for the turn indicators. I put #53's in my turn indicators and high beam indicator and 57R's in everything else. Bud

I don't know that I agree with that... GT Hawks use the same little green lenses, and I can remember driving a few where I had to look at the lever to tell whether the turn signals were on or not. Bad enough that Studebakers are old in and of themselves; no need to perpetuate stereotypes about their drivers :P

Of course I will check everything after it's back together for proper function, visibility, etc. and might even add some supplemental grounds to the instrument panel if I feel ambitious. I seem to recall it helping on my 56J with the brightness of the dash lights... (I put 57Rs in that just because they looked cool, and reminded me of my old BMW.)

If memory serves correctly, a 1445 and 53 are interchangeable.

The early Hawks can benefit from a brighter bulb in the turn and high beam indicators, but the later Hawks [ 62-64 ] and the Avanti's have a jewel for the indicator and a can use a #53 bulb which is plenty bright or if my memory is like Nate's, the 1445 is the heavy duty version of the 53 and the 1895 is the hd version of the 57 bulb. I did install #1816 bulbs in the instruments of my 62 Hawk which brightened up the panel considerably. The 1816's run hotter which can be a problem when installed close to a plastic lens. Bud
