  • Wiper Motor Question

I have a 1941 Champion 4dr. Newport Engineering sells an electric replacement wiper motor. Their listing says it will fit a Champion Deluxe model but not a Champion Standard model. What is the difference? I don't know which I have.
    Thanks

What is stamped on the body tag under the hood? Screwed to cowl on right side.

Just a guess here...I'm thinking the Deluxe had electric wipers and the Standard had vacuum-operated wipers.

My catalog goes up to 1940 and says W3 is "Regular or Cruising". Anyone have the 1941 Chassis or Body Catalog?

I'd be REALLY careful about the Newport wiper motors, I had one on my '56 Patrician that didn't last a year. It stopped one day when I really needed it, and when I took it apart the inside wiring had shorted out and burned up. I replaced it with a '57 Chevy car wiper motor, and it lasted until I sold the car.

I am not near my books but as I recall the base Champion only had one wiper. If you upgraded you got a second motor and wiper on the passenger side. I am pretty sure all 41 Champions were vacuum and Commanders/Presidents were electric. I can check all this when I get home tonight.
If the Newport unit is designed to drive both wipers off one motor it may not fit a car with one wiper.

I can tell you that you own the 8596th 1941 (3G) sedan (W) body made. The -3 is the trim level but I can't remember what that number means. I will check tonight. Now please post some pictures of your car!

Nathan My Champion has two wipers both connected to one vacuum motor at the center of the dash. Thanks for taking the time to look the information up for me. How do you post a photo?

Shoot! I forgot all about this. To post a photo you have to host it online somewhere (photobucket, flikr, etc) then paste the URL of the picture in the picture tags you get when you push the little picture button. My book is a little fuzzy but it looks like -3 means Custom trim level (middle level). The higher Custom Deluxe came "loaded" and had two-tone contrasting upholstery. The "Deluxe-Tone" top of the line model had the two-tone paint job.

On the wipers: All Champions had vacuum wipers. If you got dual wipers from the factory you got one motor with a transmission to drive the two wipers. That is probably what you have. If you only had a single wiper you got one motor directly attached to the driver's side wiper. That is what I have. It looks like someone installed a kit of some sort that added a second motor/wiper on the passenger side then rigged a control rod to the wiper knob on top of the dash so it turns both motors on.

I have no idea if that was a dealer-installed Stude kit, third party conversion, or shade-tree engineering. All three are probably equally likely. 1941 Commanders and Presidents had electric wipers. The drawings are not super in the body book but it looks like a totally different transmission arrangement from the Champion vacuum setup. Now I am wondering about that engine pulling enough vacuum to drive TWO wiper motors...

Whups, found more information in the April, 1998 Turning Wheels:
                    Trim Levels:
                    Custom 4dr. Cruising Sedan 3G-W3
                    Custom Deluxe 3G-W5
                    Deluxe-Tone 3G-W9

                    Custom details:
"The Custom was a bare-bones series that offered few amenities. It had only one windshield wiper, one sunvisor, one horn and no front armrests. It did come with two taillights, a feature not standard on 1940 Customs. Also standard on 1941 Custom models were front and rear bumper guards."

Mine shipped from the factory with only the climatizer and hill-holder as options (see my production order) So my dual wipers, phantom wheel, armrests, etc were either dealer installed or owner mods. I would guess owner mods since my car was seriously screwed with (bumpers, sun visor, spotlight, fog lights, radio, gas cap, side mirror are all "creative" add-ons) sometime between late 1940 and when my family bought it in 1946 or so.

Thanks for the info Nathan. Mine did have both sunvisors, bumper guards, both wipers and both arm rests. I guess this was all add ons by the dealer or prior owner.
