  • No Engine ID

While visiting a friend's 62 GT Hawk to get the info for the GT Hawk Registry, I noticed that there was no engine number machined into the top of the block on the driver's side. I was once told that no number meant engine replacement with a factory short block. Is this correct?

Probably, Peter. Another good way to tell would be to see if it is a full-flow engine and compare that with the car's serial number. If the serial number is too "early" to have a full-flow engine, that would confirm a replacement engine being in the car. BP

Unless someone popped in a '51 232, in which case the number would be in the rear passenger side. Unlikely.

And there should be a cloverleaf on the number pad for a replacement engine. Steve

From what I've been told, the Heavy Duty replacement engines had a cloverleaf, a standard replacement engine won't, I've got one of each. They do both have a faint "keystone" inspection stamp, but you really have to look for it.
