  • Tranny Change-over "2"

Received the production record on our GT Hawk today and pleased to say it confirms the VIN and JT engine numbers. It shows the car was an Opt.20 Auto Floor Shift, although it now has a NOS 4 spd and 4:10 TT axle in it..

We have decided to switch back to the Studebaker powershift trans and a lower rear axle as it was built. (now my wife can drive it)

I have access to a 63/64 Avanti trans and need to know what problems if any there are in transplanting it into the Hawk.

I would be interested if anyone has a Hawk tunnel tower and shifter assembly for sale as well.

Also, can anyone comment on a modification to the tranny that will allow 1st gear starts, or is that only on a FOM ?

    Tks,
    Barry

The Avanti transmission is the same as the Hawk's. The only differences are: The dipstick/filler tubes and the shift rod and throttle pressure rod are different.
There is some debate about wether the first gear start valve body will work in the Powershift. John Metzker told me that there were a couple different valve bodies made for first gear start. One type will work in the Powershift, the other he thinks will cause problems. I would check with him as he knows more about these transmissions than anyone else.

      Barry,

Get thee to eBay right away! I was surfing eBay last night, and spotted a '63 GT parts car with Powershift tower and shifter, but missing the actual transmission.

Relatively low price, and it was in London, ON, if I remember right. Definitely southern Ontario, anyhow.

Might be just what you need, and close at hand, to boot. And the car was real scruffy; it wouldn't hardly hurt at all to shoot it in the head and part it out.[8D]
