  • Why is it?

Why is it that a 63 lark and a 63 avanti take different gas caps....the lark with standard 289 or r-1.

  • #2
isn't there a fuel door on the Avanti? the Lark has the gas cap exposed on the rear panel below the trunk and above the bumper.

      Why should this matter?

More room for a Lark cap. Steve

Lark cap needs to be pretty since it is exposed!

Exactly! It has to be a very large O.D. Cap to fully cover the fuel filler pipe flange & screws and the recess in the rear body panel for same. [^]

One of those in an Avanti if it would go, would be impossible to remove!

And the problem with many aftermarket Caps for Avantis, is the "handles" hit the very close fit gas door!

The Avanti fuel tank is vented off the top. It doesn't require a vented fuel cap. Not so with the other car lines.

Actually they are vented, the '62-'66 Larks & Lark Types all have a vent tube exiting into the frame structure and require a non-vented Cap.

Consider this............A dual action fuel pump is required where the gas tank is not vented........a single action fuel pump is used where the gas tank is vented.

Studebaker never utilized to the best of my knowledge a dual action fuel pump due to the fact all of their cars were equipped with vented fuel tanks.

Studebaker always utilzed a 'vented' fuel cap from the factory....so maybe it was 'overkill'?

Ahh, Laemmle, dual action fuel pumps have nothing whatever to do with vented or non-vented gas Caps!
All Studebakers do have vented tanks, but not all through the Cap.

The Vacuum side of the pump stabilizes and increases the Vacuum at the vacuum windshield wipers, which were used as standard equipment on all low trim level, bottom of the line pre '51 Commanders and previous models before Electric Wipers.

As my post right above yours says the '62-'64 Larks and Lark Types do have sealed Caps because the Tanks are vented, also WCP say's the Avanti tanks are vented, so they also would be sealed Caps.

Due to the very short and low filler pipe on Larks, using a vented cap will dump gas on acceleration on a full tank.
