  • stuck open intake valve 50-champ blt nos

I think my bullet bit it. it sat for 15-20 years, i got it running good for about 40 minutes, then on a couple of crank ups it sounded funny like a metalic snap, the it finally started, but its popping back through the carb. compression test shows ZERO on cyld # 3. Man it was running so good, then this?? Is it possible to reach the intake valve through the spark plug hole and try to free it up ? Or is the head coming off?? Thanks to all, any info will help, this is my first stude. R. Cronkhite

Were you using fresh gas in the tank or a gas can? Old fuel can varnish up/ seperate over time and in the process of getting her fired up after a long rest can stick a valve in a guide. todays fuel have ethanol [alcohol] in them cutting down on lubrication to valves and guides. In the flatheads there isn't a lot of oil splash in that area, or maybe that valve had been open and a rust spot on the stem. For awakening one from a long rest I would mix some Marvel Mystery oil in with fresh gas to lube valve guides, so it smokes a little for the first tank. I had one friend, old Hudson mechanic get in a hurry and not clean out tank pryor to starting, result 3 stuck valves, with one seized in guide. Lou Cote [8D]

marvel Mystery oil, ATF or even 2 stroke oil does the job. Now as for the stuck valve you can pull the cover on the side and spray your favorite penetrating oil on the stem and wiggle it free with a pair of pliers.

I had 2 stuck open when I first got my 51 Champion. I soaked the ones in question with PB Blaster for a few days. No Luck!! Finally pulled the head and whipped up a batch of Acetone and ATF (50/50 mixture) and kept squirting it on the valve stems. I them found a piece of old rubber tubing that fit over the valve and with a pair of Channel Locs on the tubing slowly twisted the valve back and forth and they finally loosed up and seated.
