rebuild gets hinky. Fuel pump that came with the car turns out to be an Airtex with the numers 476 was this an aftermarket option for this engine?

The company seems to still be in bussiness but has yet to answer any e-mails.

Is this engine a boat anchor, if so what would be a good replacement?

I have a 28 Dictator GE six. I think those engines are very tough for the most part. If there is still oil in it. The weak links are the pot metal carbs and the water jacket housing on the side of the engine. The housing was pressed out of a single sheet of metal originally and they rust out. I don't know of anyone who is reproducing this part. My Ge was converted to down draft carb by the previous owner by reversing just the intake manifold and extending the pipe for the carb. It now has a carb from an early 50's dodge truck. With the fuel pump rebuilt I had it up to 60 once on the highway. (I wouldn't advise anyone going that fast with those mechanical brakes unless the road is empty and straight.)

I think alot of those early F pumps share the same guts and only the pump arms were different. If the one you have has screws holding the two halfs together, I think it is rebuildable.

The engine in my '28 has an AC pump. I have seen others this era and they look alot alike.
It's a rebuildable pump, i'm just trying to find out if anyone knows about the Airtex pump and if it was an after market pump. None of the info i have recieved show this brand as factory installed. I don't want to send it off for rebuild if the pump is not for this engine?

I work for Airtex. The 476 pump has been obsolete for a few years now. This pump was always an aftermarket item as far as I know. We did sell SASCO some water pumps for service only in the late 60's & early 70's (we've also sold the "newer" sasco fuel & water pumps too).

Thanks! That answer one of my questions. If i don't find an original factory one to compare this one too. I will probably end up doing a shade tree rebuild to see if it pumps. Before i send it off.

The engine is the original version of the big six used by Studebaker until 1960.
