  • '64 259 engine colours

I searched here and looked at TW for May. Lots of info but the suggestions don't quite make it. J Deere yellow is too greeny and Chev/Chrysler orange is too red. I need PPG or Dupont codes for the yellow and orange red. Can anyone help?
By the way, my fan never saw orange, only black.

I believe that Stude-Intl has spray cans of the correct yellow for the valve covers, but I don't recall seeing the orange advertised. I've seen show quality Studes and their yellow valve covers look to be a bit on the tan side compared to JD yellow. I prefer the JD yellow as it is very bright.

No one I know of has ever gone for the Paint Co. formula, probably because there is none. There is no reason when Duplicolor sells the Chevrolet Orange in two flavors, you want the redder red-Orange Ceramic 500 Degree Engine Enamel for Fan, engine dipstick Handle & Oil Caps, add the Blue & White STP stickers to them. [^]

The Semi Gloss Black Hi-Temp. Engine Enamel is everywhere in Auto Parts Stores for the complete engine.

The Yellow for Valve Covers & Auto. Trans. Dipstick Handle can be found on any Paint store's shelf, slightly pale, no Bright Yellow, and no Green-Yellow, the valve covers do not get hot enough to worry about the paint burning off.

OR, buy it from a Stude. Vendor, S.I. has [u]ALL</u> of the Engine colors!

Prior to 1961, the original factory replacement fan blades were Black and some older factory installed fans were black, but none after 1960.

Here you go Andrew, just ignore the fact that this is an Early '62 partial flow block painted up like a late full flow and check out the pale yellow, Black and Red-Orange, even with too much flash the color shows.

Here is the same Engine now installed in a '64 Daytona Sedan

Thanks for this. Unfortunately I am in Canada and paint can't cross the border in the mail so SI can't help. Didn't know about the 2 shades of Duplicoat Chev red/orange. I'll try for the reder one.
I tried a test patch of the the JDeere yellow today...definitely too bright and greeny even allowing for fading in service. I'll keep sampling and post my results. Thanks for including the pics.

Keep in mind that the color will vary depending on what color of material is underneath and how many coats you apply.

Looks like Fram orange to me!

Are colors for the 259 the same?

FWIW, the engine in my '55 was a '63 289 and the fan was black. Also, I came up with a 5-blade clutch fan from somewhere, it was also black. MOST of the ones I have seen were orange, but somehow I ended up with two black ones.

By all accounts the breathers and oil dipstick are "redder than the Fram orange. The Dupli-Colour ceramic Engine Enamel Chev orange-red DE1607 sounds promising. There are traces of it on the one surviving breather. I'll try it and the Daytona Yellow and let you know.

Late model Allis-Chalmers orange (about 1975 and newer?) may be close to what you need. Earlier AC orange is lighter in color.

I tried the Dubli-Colour Daytona Yellow engine paint DE1642 and matched against some thick paint areas which I polished and it looks very good under various light. Softer and a little warmer that the Deere Yellow.
Tried the D-C Chev Orange-Red DE1607. Didn't have as good a sample to match with but it too looks very good. Not so excited by the Low Gloss Black DE1634 as some suggested. Samples on my block are quite shiny so I would move up to the Gloss Black. Until we get some factory paint codes this is what I will go with. Thanks everyone for your input.
