  • 37 Dictator engine -- will a 50-51 six bolt in?

has anyone put a later 6 into 37 Dictator?

or does anyone have any standard rings for 37 six?

I have a half assembled stock 37 dictator six needing rings

and also a good running 1950 Six that I could put in it's place -- is it a bolt in?

I have a 37 Dictator with its stock transmission and clutch settup with a 53 245ci six, so I know it can be done. I don't know wether the old bellhousing or 53 bellhousing was used. If you use a bell housing other than the one that came with the engine, be sure to center it per the shop manual. I would check with Studebaker International, Studebakers West, and Bob Kapteyn for the rings. I also think I know where several engines are that run ok and might be for sale if yours don't work out. Good Luck. Bob

Just so we don't get confused, here's a Studebaker "Big Six" from 1928 (354 cid).

Not the same as the '32-'60 flat head. (Thanks, Paul Johnson for this image)

Interesting topic. I'm going through this right now. I have 4 engines available to go into my '37 coupe-express. The one in the CE now is a '49 to '53 truck engine 2R14 according to the engine number. It has what appears to be the '37 bell housing and clutch/pressure plate. Not sure about the trans and overdrive. I have one on the floor that is a '49 Commander engine, a'50 Commander engine with '37 bell housing and transmission (out of a '37 Dictator parts car) and an original '37 engine that I probably will not use because I just got an estimate of $4900 to rebuild it. I spent today taking the bell housing off the '49 Commander and fitting the '37 flywheel and bell housing. The bell housing for the '49 is much shorter than the '37 and the rear engine mounts are on the transmission. In addition, the flywheel is slightly larger in diameter, and the bolt holes for the top of the bell housing to engine are repositioned. I can make the '37 flywheel and bell housing work with the '49 engine easier than I can change the clutch linkage and throwout bearing levers. I guess the biggest reason I'm using this setup is to be able to use the later engine with the insert bearings with the earlier linkages. If you want to talk about this whole process e-mail me at studebaker4829@live.com or call me at 318-949-9744 Tom Lewis

I have the '37 Std rings, but I would rather have the 245. I had a 31 mod 56 which had been converted to a 245. It ran strong but still had the crappy early trans & was a bear to shift.
I sold it to a crazy hippy who drives the hell out of it daily.
