    Another plate on the seat reads: R38-360

    What have I got? I know it is a 1954 model, but what size is it? What does the "C-2" mean? It has dual rear wheels and a 2-speed rear axle. Compared to other trucks, it looks like a 1 1/2 ton, although the stake bed is quite short. Is it a 1 1/2 T? 1 T? Something else?

    I'm still searching for the engine number so I can find out what it is. It is a V-8.

    I'd appreciate any help on identifying this old sister.

    OK, here you go:

    R38 = 2 Ton

    C2 = Standard cab (C4=Deluxe Cab)

    If it is the stock V8, it will be a 232 - the engine serial will confirm or refute this.

    Post some pics. [^]

    BTW, a 1 1/2 ton truck would be an R28. 1954 R28's and 38's were the first factory Stude V8 trucks. The first V8's were not put in the 1 Ton and smaller trucks until 1955 (E series).

      If it is a 1954, it's an R-38 actually a 3R-38. with a 232 V-8 similar to '51-'54 Commander car. Heavy Trucks in 1954: R28, R38, had the first V-8's. the same Serial number plate below the seat on the seat riser has the GVW listed which should tell you it's capacity, it is considered approximately a 2 Ton, depending on springs and axle.

      It is the 260th R-38 built as a 3R (1954) year model. ANY 1954 C Cab is a VERY rare model.

      The W/B should also be on the plate usually without the first digit, there were 131,155,171 & 195 in. Wheelbases.

      The Engine numbers for 3R-38's start at VT-2301, it is on the left front top corner of the block STAMPED in, NOT raised.

      C2 is the Standard Cab, not a C4 Deluxe cab.

          Early 1955 model cars and all 1955 V-8 Trucks except E28, E38 (1 1/2 & 2 Ton) and 1956 V-8 Trucks except E13, E28, E38 1 Ton, 1 1/2 & 2 Ton which were all 259. [:0]

            Rich,now I'm more confused.I thought 55 Commanders had the 224,and Presidents had the 259.so an early President had the 224,and then later had the 259?

              It is not that hard to understand Joe, since we were talking trucks, I did not (should have) mentioned early '55 "COMMANDERS" had 224's late have 259, since it is the same engine, same heads, I don't consider it a big deal, you just have a quicker, lower torque engine that you cannot buy pistons for, if you happen to have a pre-Alta Vista early '55 Comm. that's all!

              1955's are without a doubt the most messed up year EVER for having many running changes and too many models, than any post-war year I can think of, on top of UAW strike and Steel Strike, it was one really bad year but because of all new styling they managed to sell a fair amount regardless.
