Latest on Avanti Carpet?

Hi, Gang. I'm going to be looking for a turquoise and black replacement carpet set for my 1963 Avanti. Have any new suppliers come on the scene with an accurate turquoise and black carpet, or is Phantom Auto Works about the only source for the salt and pepper style of carpet fabric? Thanks. There' have been several attempts to reproduce the salt and pepper carpet in the past but none have been correct. It's been several years since I've seen a sample from Phantom and I don't remember how it compared. The closest I think I've seen to date is available from StockIntriors.com. It's called Tuxedo Loop- 200 Series. Their # 2208 is the Turquoise and Black you'd need. I sent for samples and what they sent is brighter in color and has less black in the mix compared to the factory material. Since Studebaker used cut and sewn carpet rather than molded, I don't think Stock Interiors offers premade sets. You'd have to get yardgoods and have a trim shop do the fabricating.

I can provide a Avanti carpet in Tuxedo, but it's expensive, and not that close, although as close as it comes.

For what it's worth, I RECENTLY asked Phantom for a sample of their red & black S&P carpet.
It looks very, very, close color-wise compared to the photo of a sample on theavanti.com (the only place I know where to look for original carpet...since I don't have a dealers book...if anyone has a better source, please let me know).
Having said that, my sample could use a [u]bit</u> more black...but then, that could be just the sample I received. I'm awfully tempted to buy it. And my wife likes it (always a plus).

Having said all that, I don't know if they have the color you need...give 'em a call. Can't hurt.

My comparisons are made to the actual carpet or to the samples in the Avanti Dealer Book. I've also got the material specs from Engineering. Untill someone is willing to spend the money to have the material made correctly, you're pretty well stuck with whats already out there. And don't forget to change the carpet on the bottom of the door and quarter trim so they match the floor.

But some of us have neither....
In your opinion, how do your the samples compare with the ones in the website I mentioned?

stockinteriors.com used to have 2283 tuxedo red&black by the yard. I purchased 3 yards a year ago and did my Avanti. It was the exact color. I matched a sample to an area of the old carpet that was shielded from age/sun/etc.

They don't show that number any more on the sample list. But for anyone in need, it may be worth calling them.

I bought jute padding, trim material and a tentmaker sewing machine on ebay. And the rest was pretty easy. The doors were fun, though every thing else was straight forward. Even the doors weren't very much work.

Great photo and I ordered a sample from stockinteriors.com .
They will give me more options and a better chance to get the carpet right.

BTW: from the photos provided by R2Andy I have a [u]hunch</u> that Phantom uses the same carpet stock as stockinteriors (the turquoise/black seems to be in the same ratio as the red & black Phantom sent me)...I bet they just make them into Avanti sets.

UPDATE:

I received my carpet sample from stockinteriors.com
And what I guessed above about it being the same material as sold by Phantom in their kits is wrong (this isn't the first time ).

Their red & black Tuxedo color #2205 is very, very red.
Far brighter than the color showns on R2Andy's photo above or the sample shown at:
http://www.theavanti.com/combinations/ColorScheme7.html .

On the bright side, it looks well made and seems to have a more correct ratio of black to red than my sample from Phantom (which admittedly could be an anomoly).

The color would probably look fine in an Avanti or other Stude, but IMHO, it's probably too bright for my restoration of a stock Avanti red car.

The red and black in the R2Andy sample exactly matches the 2283 tuxedo. It was called firethorn in chevyland. What they sent you is red, like they put in most of the chevies. I say most because a few of them used the same color as the Avanti did. Stockinteriors number was 2283.

I received two samples from them 2283 and 2205.

They no longer list 2283 on their site. It is likely they still have some and are discontinuing it. Or they can still get it.

What about the orange/black salt and pepper? I only see only offered red/black. I wonder if enough was ordered that they can just make it?
