  • Dodged a bullet

In an earlier post talking about my head gasket swap I remarked I was happy that it just seemed oil got in the coolant and not the other way around.

This assumption was made on the fact that the oil looked like oil not "milkshake" which would normally be the case.

Well today I flushed the cooling system and drained the oil, and got about a quart of coolant out of the oil pan

Luckily everything still sounds good and she's been refilled with 5 fresh quarts.

Lots of overdue maintenance on this one but its getting there slowly.

Oh hey, that's right--the coolant goes to the bottom; the oil stays on top--the dipstick only picks up the oil cuz the water runs off as you pull it out.

Good story. Most people not in the automotive repair trade never hear about manufacturers' "hidden warranties". Those are for the problems they don't want made public, but will cover the repair to keep it that way. If the problem could be classified as a "safety" issue, huge damages would be facing the mfgr. A former Toronto mayor (Nathan Phillips) sued Ford and won big time. Ford fought because they figured the costs of losing the law suit were less than the costs of a continent wide recall. They never figured the mayor would take it right to the Supreme Court and with the resulting publicity, they had to recall, anyway. Go figure.
