  • Powershift set-up.

    This one's a long-shot:

I want to install a Powershift auto into my '53 coupe resto-mod (I have all the parts). Does anyone have advice/description/template for establishing the location, shape, and size of hole to cut into the hump for this application? I can foresee this as becoming a raggedy floorboard nightmare if I'm left to a guesstimate!

    Thanks, folks!

If you have the Powershift fiberglass "tower" from a GT, I'd place it on the floor for the "best fit" with the curve of the floor and tunnel, then cut inside of that.

      Thanks, Dick!

Yes, I have the fiberglass tower, and that's what I will do. I just didn't want to over-size the hole if all that was needed is a slot for the linkage to reach through!

      Much appreciated!

        Paul,

I would suggest that you attach the shifter to the transmission while it is out of the car. With the help of a friend holding the tower, find a location where things line up well and it shifts through the whole quadrant OK. Then measure the distance from the center line of the tranny to the center line of the tower (side to side location). Measure from the bell housing back to the center line of the tower (front to back location).

Armed with these dimensions, install the transmission in the car and locate that center point of the tower, drilling a hole there. Then cut a hole around that point that is just barely big enough to get the shifter through. Hook up the linkage and fine tune your location by cutting the hole a bit larger in the appropriate direction(s).

While you're fine tuning the linkage adjustments, verify that the back-up light switch and the neutral safety switch are properly adjusted.

          Thanks, Jim!

This plan should get me even closer to the "bullseye" for the opening. I certainly don't want to open up a gaping hole under the tower to the road elements if it's not necessary. I'd still be curious as to what the hole looks like in a factory app on a GT, but I should be able to improvise. I've already determined that the '53 floor pan is NOT identical in shape to the GT in the area just aft of the largest part of the trans tunnel!

          Thanks again for the response!
