  • Electrical: 54Hornring

54 horn ring. I seat the spring on.top of nut and place my horn ring over it, screwing the ring into place, being aware of plastic insulators also keeping the brass contact centered in the dimple. I have no horn.Removing the hornring I thought a jumper wire from the brass contact to the bignut would play the horns. It does not. I can jump wire from the brass contact to the face of the turn signal switch or elsewhere on the car and the horns work. Click image for larger version

conductivity is lost to dirt and corrrosion over the decades. Usually, cleaning everything up really well solves the problem. As long as you can make horns beep, you know the wire, relay and horns are OK.

Have come to learn that the steering column center shaft is insulated on automatic, power steering equipped cars. I seem to be understanding from other posts. I do not have the correct parts. I think these 3 are Stude# 534442 a bearing, 534512 a spring, and 534513 seat. That set up grounds my steering wheel. I am thinking my bearing is in place, it is the spring and seat I am missing. Pulling wheel off again

I found plate 08-7 pg 181 in the Chassis manual in the transmission section. I am missing a bearing 1305-10 a bearing , 1305-14 a spring, 1305-15 seat... I find the manuals a bit vague in this area.

      Did you resolve this?
I'm in the middle of upgrading power steering into my 53 commander K with auto. I have been collecting the pieces and I'm trying to be sure that I have what parts are needed to get this to work. (yes, that chassis book in is confusing on those parts).
I noticed in the one picture that it looks like the wheel is painted. That metal ring on the bottom of the horn ring has to contact ground. Might that be the issue?
BTW, if you have a chance, I have a thread that I'm looking for a picture of the start(safety) lockout/backup light switch that is down by the shift arm. It would be very helpful to me if you could snap one.
      Thanks,
      John
