  • Other: Paint for Back Side of Bumpers - What Do You Use?

Putting a NOS rear bumper on my '64 Daytona, and want to paint the "backside" of the bumper. Plan on using self-etching primer, then a top coat.

Wanted to see what topcoat others have used on their bumpers that worked well over time.

I used rattle can silver Rust-Oleum on my 64 Daytona over 20 years and it has held up well. It hasn’t a been subjected to our road salt in the winters though.

Grey Rustoleum, been good 17 years, no salt or water here either.

When New, the bumpers were flash chrome on the back which is so thin that it rusts very quickly, so a good primer like cold galvanizing Zinc with a good quality Silver top coat will restore it to look new again.

last one i did i cleaned up a bit - you don't want to try to remove all the rust just the loose scale - and sprayed with rustoleum rust reformer. then rustoleum chrome spray paint. ought to hold up well on a pampered car. not had good luck with 'cold galvanizing' you need really clean bare iron for it to adhere. POR15 and rust reformer react with iron oxide to form an impervious barrier or a base for finish coat.

Thank you all for your great input!!

This bumper, being NOS, is very clean on the back side. If it was rusty, I would sure use POR-15 or similar. Was thinking of using Rustoleum Cold Galvanizing spray, but Jeff's experience with the cold galvanizing has me rethinking this.

Starting to lean towards self etching primer and aluminum/silver Rustoleum...................

I bought cheap reproduction bumpers for my MGB. Painted the backsides with primer and Rustoleum silver paint Bumpers still look like new - 20 years later.
My newly acquired / purchased Super Lark clone is going to have similar done - SOON.

Been using rattle can Rust-oleum Stainless Steel Appliance Epoxy. Not a "in your face" shade of silver, and is moisture proof. Works and looks close to silver cad plating on bolts and under hood parts such as latches, clamps etc. When using over rust, I will put it over a base coat of etching primer. Seems to hold up quite well.

I also painted the back side of all the pot metal on my cars. figured it can't hurt and might seal and stop pitting from back side.. lots of chrome potmetal on my 57 and 56
