  • Steering: power steering hose leak question

I had the control valve rebuilt on my 63 gt hawk and installed all new lines. However, one of them is leaking from where the tube enters the fitting that goes into the control valve on the top. I've tightened it firmly, but it still leaks. The control valve has all new seats. Any ideas why its leaking? Thx.

Try putting the old line back on. Hopefully you did not throw any of the old ones away, because you might need them.

Joe you are so right, never ever toss the old hoses............indeed some years ago I blew one of the a/c hoses on my Avanti, I took the hose to Morland Hose and Belting, they utilized the ends and gave me new high pressure hose, this way I know the steel ends are bent correctly...........they told me they do a tremendous business with old power steering hoses. They accept hoses shipped to them........Morland Hose............Hempstead, Long Island, NY

Replacing the Seats could be the problem, if one is poorly installed or wrong that will do it.

Is the flare perfect? You might try to touch it up. I do not mean to be rude, but it is pretty easy to cross thread these things. (They are not exact duplicates of the original - only approximations.) I've had better luck taking the old one to a hydraulic hose rebuilder. I recently had to replace the brake caliper cross-over pipes on the Avanti as they were installed backwards and had rubbed on wheel. I ordered new ones and they did work but required a lot of adjustment to get them to fit.

I'm going to pull the hose today. The seats were replaced by an experienced rebuilder, so I hope that isn't it. If the flare looks bad, I may cut the tip off and reflare it if there is enough play to do that. We'll see. Needless to day, very frustrating.

you can use a repair washer to fix a bad seat or flare. you can find them here in different sizes. https://www.autozone.com/cooling-hea...0?cmpid=OSA:US
