For true, Dwight. That's what any reasonable, rational person would do. However, we're all Studebaker folk and some of us are serially numbered folk. It's deciding how unreasonable a person chooses/can afford to be.

You have framed the issue well. At some time in the future I'll either be called: (1) a reasonable, rational person, or (2) a serial-number deviant. Hopefully, I'll be called the former. Thanks for the guidance! And, thanks to all others who responded. I might well have made a poorer choice without y'all.

If I purchase 4 sets (of 6) of these Hastings rings then I'll have 3 sets of 8. Does anyone need a set ?

My bad; I'd mislaid that you were wanting to go back to standard R3 3.65" bore. The Hastings 2M666 are for the standard bore 3.5625" and +.060" bore Studebaker V8 and Chevrolet 6-cyl. You'll need to go with the Jaguar rings Brad suggested.

Hastings 3.622" Bore +.040" Over Size, 6-Cylinder Ring Set with 5/64" Top, 5/64" Second and Oil Ring is 3/16".
This 6-Cylinder Ring Set has a top ring manufactured from grey iron with phosphate ring surface treatment, a second ring manufactured from grey iron with phosphate ring surface treatment. The 1st oil control ring is manufactured of steel rail/stainless expansion with a chrome rail ring surface treatment.
As far as I can see in the Hastings catalog, they're available in plain, as above, and with first and second ring chrome; but there's no moly listed.

I have a vague recollection of using Hastings 2M633030 in an R3 build many years ago; they're nominally 3-5/8" bore. Good thing was they come in sets of eight for Buicks, maybe.

Dwight is there any reason you did not return to WCD to effectuate the work you have undertaken at another facility?

I can more than understand your angst with them having my own questions concerning certain aspects of an engine rebuild and what was and what was not effectuated, and the childish bush league answers I received. As I remember they attempted to shift the blame for your situation on the late Lionel Stone and the parts he provided towards the rebuild. Glad you are with folks that you can trust and count on.

Although Lionel Stone did a service to the Studebaker community by making high performance parts his quality control was zero. But, knowing that, the engine builder should have gone through the shop manual measurements on the first oil pump, and they didn't.

And yet so many flock to this Studebaker "expert" ;-(
