  • Fuel System: Need an Accelerator Pump for a Carter AS3370S

Carb not giving that splash of fuel needed to start. Car runs fine if started with starting fluid or a splash of gas, however it will not start cold. I expect we need a new accelerator pump. Carb number is AS3370SX on the tag. I found kits for AS3370S (Carter one barrel), but they are quite expensive and most likely not necessary as the car runs fine after it starts. Anyone know a source for a pump?

Even if it might help, the pump circuit has nothing to do with cold starts. You should also check the float level and the fuel pressure. If you take tha carb out of the car, It is also worth checking that the step-up rod works as intended.

The pump circuit definitely has to do with cold starts. You pump the gas pedal, it squirts some fuel into the manifold from the accelerator pump.

Having a full choke on, when cold is what allows a car to start, if that is not happening it needs to.

I have to prime the carb on all my Studes (filter off) except, maybe, if only 1 day has gone by since driving. Any more than that, they need priming. Exception: I did pump into the Lark 4 gallons of "real'" 90 octane gas last week........ no problem with a cold start 2 days later. I'm guessing evaporation in your carb is the culprit and sounds like good, warm driving confirms that. Problems accelerating ??

To positively determine if the accelerator pump is working or not, crank the engine over a few seconds, then TURN THE KEY OFF and remove the air cleaner. Stick a screwdriver handle in place to hold the choke open, then, while peering directly into the carb throat, slowly work the accelerator linkage back and forth, by hand, a few times. Each time you open the lower butterfly you should see gas spraying across the carb throat. No spray, or dribble instead of spray, indicates the pump is not working properly. If spray is present, the problem ain't the accelerator pump.

Agree with Joe Hall. Verify first that the accel. pump is not working before you attempt to fix it. Make sure your choke is closed. If the accel. pump is really bad, the carb will backfire or the engine will stall if the throttle is suddenly opened. The Model AS is a good carb, but tricky to service.

I install a pump through electric fuel pump controlled with a lighted switch. After sitting for a week, turn pump on and listen for a change in sound. shut pump off start engine. No starting fluid or poring gas in carburetor.

Thanks, christophe for the tip on ebay, purchased that part. Removed and cleaned the carb, put the new accelerator pump in and put everything back together. Now the car starts and runs great.
