  • Interior: Avanti rearview mirror fix

In addressing the loose rearview mirror issue in my 1963 Avanti, I tried a number of different suggestions on line with limited success. This is what finally worked. Cut a short length of 1/2 inch black shrinkfit, slip it over the mirror ball and apply heat to conform, trim excess. Repeat with windshield ball, install stem and adjust as needed. This worked on the larger mirror as well as the original mirror.

The additional grip plus thickness provided better stability for the mirror

After doing the above and not liking the result, I finally took Jon Myers suggestion and put a mirror from a Lincoln on the glass, that was over 35 years ago, still attached, solid, and looking good. If you need the FoMoCo P/N I can post it later.

I use the later mirror stem which is the same as some late 60s Mustangs. Much better design than the early type. CJ Classics FM-BM014B Mustang Rear View Mirror Bracket and Mirror Mount Chrome 1968-1969 | CJ Pony Parts

When I moved my mirror on the Avanti I installed one from an early '60s Rambler. Identical to Stude day/night but with ball that fits the original Avanti bracket. Oops- there is a small "R" etched in the glass that hasn't been noticed.

The mirror fix I posted did not hold up long term, other remedies, like a star washer, work much better. Sorry about the poor advice!

Bought one from NAPA to go on my new windsheild. Low priced and larger than the Avanti mirror and it stay put and easy to see whats behind you.
