I have never heard of this before. Fuel seems to be siphoning out of the fuel tank breather tube where I would put the gas nozzle for filling the tank. It is a rubber line that has a clamp on it. The clamp needs to be replaced, but why would it siphon gas out of the tank? I went out to the shop and discovered a steady drip out of that breather tube onto the floor. Any ideas? My car is a 1948 Commander Regal Deluxe.

'48 tanks are not vented, simply have a filler neck without a vacuum cap. I suspect your filler hose may have cracks in it, and leaks when the tank is full. Order a replacement from a Studebaker vendor.

The tank actually had a full five gallons of gas left in it after I thought I had siphoned most of it out. The tank is out. Now I need to figure out the best way to clean it and drill out that broken drain plug. The vent hose had a hole worn in it between the tank and the filler tube. I couldn't see it before the tank was out. I still don't understand why it had a steady drip. Now I need to find a place to dispose of that nasty five gallons of gas. I don't see how that car could even run on the gas that was in the tank. No wonder I need to replace the fuel filter so often.
