  • Fuel System: Carb Restoration

I’m looking to have my AFB model 3506 restored to as new condition, not just rebuilt.
I was going to send it to Dave Thibeault, but after contacting him the earliest he can get to it is approximately March or April.
I’d like to get it going before then.
Using the Stude vendors website I came across the Classic Preservation Coalition run by Hal Houghton.
Do any of you have any experience with Hal and his work?

    Thanks.

Never dealt with Hal, but I've sent several carbs to Daytona Parts Co with good results.

To my knowledge Daytona Parts only sells parts. They quit rebuilding a few years ago.

I had Hal Houghton rebuild the Stromberg AAUVB-26 off my '52 Commander. No complaints, and the car ran well. When I put the new 259 in the car I changed to a Stromberg WW 6-123 that I purchased from the Carburetor Center in El Monte, CA. For my money I think the newer carb was done to a higher standard and I'm very happy with it.

No, they still do full rebuilds.

There isn't a lot to do to rebuild an AFB just take it apart replace all the gaskets, clean it well and assure all the fuel and air passages are clean. Don't bend or adjust anything, just put it back together, unless somebody else has adjusted it. The factory got it right when they assembled it. Just open the idle screws 1.5 turns each and it will run just fine. I have taken several carbs apart and if you don't mess with it, it won't mess with you. Many times electrical and vacuum leaks are mistaken for carb issues.

I’m not looking for rebuilding, I’m looking for full restoration (rechromating the upper and lower halves of the body, having the linkage replated etc).

Disassembling, cleaning, and replacing gaskets doesn't fix them when they're worn out. More often than not, the throttle shaft bores are worn and need to be bushed, for example.
