  • Brakes: Parking Brake Cable Guides?

    1960 Hawk - 289 - Automatic

I am going over the park braking system and am wondering if the 1960 Hawks came with the guide brackets highlighted in blue on the photo of the Chassis Catalog, posted herein.

The illustration numbers / part numbers are:
    • 1110-26 / 532668
    • 1110-27 / 532669

I went under the vehicle and did not see these guides or their likely mounting points. I know the Chassis Catalog illustration is indicates “Typical Parking Brake”… was the Hawk “typical”? Does the 1960 Hawk not use these?

Going under the car I can see I have both of the rearward brackets (passenger side circled in red in attached photo). Illustration number / part number:
    • 1110-28 / 1549481
    • 1110-29 / 1549482
As is now, the drivers side of the parking brake cable seems like it would contact frame rail and passenger side would get caught up on drivers side exhaust pipe.

    Photos attached are:
    • Chassis Catalog - Yellow highlighter indicates components that I have. Blue highlighter indicates missing components.
    • Photo showing rearward bracket, on passenger side, circled in red.
    • Photo showing where parking brake cable contacts exhaust pipe if pulled taught, as is now - without forward guide bracket.
Guidance is appreciated. Pictures speak at least 1,000 words so any photos would be great!

    Vehicle’s Background:
The car underwent a restoration from 2003-2006. Restoration shop went bankrupt prior to 100% completion. Owner died in 2008. Son had garaged until 2022. Another owner bought and never got around to it. I now own it and trying to get it on the road.

Vehicle has/had dual muffler / dual exhaust. Exhaust system was replaced, per original owners records, I do not know if it was with OEM or aftermarket. I removed passenger side all the way to the most forward portion of pipe as it was not supported with mounts from beneath the firewall area back. The weight of the system was primarily resting on the parking brake cable under it… the white rope you see in the photo was not supporting the muffler at all.

Once the passenger side exhaust unit is reinstalled it may cause an additional clearance issue. Not sure I want that passenger side exhaust routed as it was… hangs quite low and seems like an after though… but that can be dealt with at a later time.

Original exhaust pipe had a flattened area the parking cable passed under.

Cool, thanks for that info. It certainly makes more sense now

If you look carefully at the applications listed at the right of those Part Number listings, it will tell you if they are used on a 60V "C" Body.

Rich, was that piece of advice specific because because I listed incorrect parts for my 60V C body or was it a general tip in case is was not yet aware?

I ask because I am new to understanding all the codes, notes, and ways of listing multiple part numbers for a single illustration number. Like how illustration number 1110-27 will list parts numbers for the guide, screws, bolts, nuts, washers…. So it is possible that I am missing something. Feels like drinking from a fire hose at times as I am learning so much new information daily about these cars.

I have attached a photo of the Chassis Catalog page with the part numbers highlighted for confirmation that I did (or did not) select the correct part numbers for my 60V C body, left hand drive.

I think you are reading it just fine, all Models means all models in the year range of that Book.

The reason you see so many parts for other models in that Group is, the Body Type L is the Convertible and the Model Type P is the Wagons and the '63/'64 are the Wagonaire's, both the L Body Type and the P with sliding roof have the X Member Frame so many frame related items are not like the rest.

If at the right, it shows Body Type C or C & K, it applies to your Body type. The Codes are in the Front of the book.

So those that say All, apply, if at the top of the part listing page, it notes the SAME "Frame Number" (picture) that you got those Part Picture ID numbers from.
At times in some sections, the Parts on the Picture Page only apply to the Models or Years noted under the Drawing.
That is simply because in some cases the Body Types or Years are SO different that it takes 2 or more Picture Pages to show their configurations, they can't be combined.

I hope I did not confuse you by explaining the How and why of it all, I try to avoid lengthy responses when possible.

Yes, you are missing the1110-26 and 27 guides. They bolt onto the vertical face of the frame side rails with two screws apiece something like 18 inches or so in front of the rear cable hangers. The compression springs that should be somewhere on your cable react against them to hold the front portion of the cable lightly taught. When properly formed the exhaust pipes neatly miss the cables.

Those guides I made from scratch. Not difficult. But SI has them.
