I want to adjust my valves as they are to noisy however, I can't
seem to get the valve covers loose from the heads.I don't want to
damage them as the are are nicely painted. Are there any tricks to getting them off without damaging them.

Fold a hand-towel up so you have 4-6 layers. Place near the ENDS of the valve cover and hit with a RUBBER mallet. A few good pops should do it.
You can do it towards the center of the cover- but you can't hit it as hard... but you may get better flex in that area. I hope someone hadn't "glued" it on with weatherstrip adhesive...

      I use a ruber mallet.
Smack them on the end corner a coupla times. They come right up. It's easier if after you remove nuts, to also remove the washers from the studs...then just grab ahold and wiggle them off of the studs.

I guess everyone has their own favs, but I just take a putty knife and force it between the gasket and the head and run it around until all is free, sometimes it helps when lifting it off to punch the 4 Grommets inside the cover so it does not have to come up 100% perfectly level.
