  • Interior: 1960 Lark Dash Radio Speaker

    Greetings All,
I am preparing for spring and redoing the interior of my Lark. I acquired and cleaned up a radio faceplate from an old Lark radio and installed it. My plan is to purchase a small AM/FM radio and hid it somewhere out of site. The rear window shelf will receive a new cover and speaker grill. It will also get an LED third brake light.

My question is, does anyone know of a good quality dash speaker that will fit in a '60 Lark without any altering of the dash or speaker?

I have a '60 Lark. I made a "faceplate" out of 1/8" plywood, sprayed with aluminum paint, and installed a Dual XDM17BT stereo in it. Get them at WalMart, 29 bucks. No CD drive, no cassette drive, the radio is less than 2" deep behind the faceplate, and weighs a few ounces. Can stream from a smartphone via Bluetooth, receive AM and FM broadcasts, and has a line-in jack, and a USB port to play mp3's off a thumb drive (may main use of it). I put speakers in the doors, because door panels were trashed anyway, and glued a pair of old computer speakers to the package shelf for rear speakers. Sound is fine by my ear. I have these in 4 vehicles now, and have 2 new ones in boxes for future use.

I made no effort to hide it. The car is mine to drive and enjoy, and I have no interest in making it look 100% stock. But these little stereos are so small and light you could hide one in the glove box, and still have most of the glove box free to use for your stuff.

Thanks Gord. I'm going to look into that radio. I'll still hide it somewhere because I like the look of the original in the dash.

The original speaker is 4 inches by 8 inches with a 10 ohm impedance. Finding a good used one is almost impossible but SM Electrotech is making new ones. They aren't cheap, but they will fit and work just like the original. Their website is smelectrotech.com. Bud
