  • Fuel System: 1963 Avanti gas cap

Is the gas cap on a 1963 Avanti vented? Where can I get a correct gas cap? Thanks Howard

No, the gas cap on Studebaker Avantis is not vented. The gas tank itself is vented, so the cap does not need to be vented, I assume that Studebaker did it this way because any fuel sloshed out of a vented cap on an Avanti might get onto the quarter panel.

You know Dwight, I have to laugh........I learned as far back as 1966 when I purchased my first Avanti, to never fill the gas tank to the neck, especially during the summer...........unless I was on the highway interstate and would immediately continue without stopping. Additionally I learned "painfully" living in Miami that having a gas tank more than 3/4 was just asking for the gas to expand and dump itself all over the 1/4 panel

The non-vented Avanti cap is available at Studebaker International and many other Stude Vendors.

Here is an example of what gasoline can do to acrylic lacquer paint (which our Avantis were originally painted with). This happened before my ownership, so I don't know how this happened. Did a previous owner use a vented gas cap, fill the tank fully, and go around right-hand turns fast? Your guess is as good as mine.
