  • Electrical: For you Electrical guys, Fuse Panel Questions?

1963 Avanti, what is the difference between an AG fuses and SAE fuses? Also, what is the highest ampere for the short fuses? Thank you.

AG fuses were/are the 1/4'-diameter glass fuses that were used in cars until about 30 years ago. AG stands for automotive glass. There are several sizes: AGA, AGC, etc. Their predecessors were called SFE, which stood for Society of Fuse Engineers. To a substantial degree, the 1/4" SFE and AG fuses are interchangeable. Some AG fuses are much bigger. SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Thank you, interesting since the fuse panel calls out both.

SFE fuses came in different lengths according to their rating. AGC fuses are mostly the same length, as far as I know, at least the ones we are likely to run across.

Gord is correct (as usual). All AGC fuses (the most common size) are 1.25" long. AGA, AGW, AGX, and AGY are all the same 1/4" diameter but are shorter .
