  • Transmission / Overdrive: Muncie 4 Speed from a Chevrolet into a Studebaker

    Hi Guys,
I have been offered a Muncie 4 speed box that has been taken out of a 1965 Chevrolet sedan.
It sounds like it is has an aluminium casing.

Do these straight fit into the Studebaker bell housing ? I am toying with changing my 3 speed OD in my 62 GT for the 4 speed.

I have read somewhere that there is a difference in input shaft lengths. Is that correct.

Any advice would be welcome as to what I should look for since I am in the UK.

    Regards and thanks

The first thing that pops up is that the 3spd bell housing uses a Ford pattern, not GM. Early 62s dis have a bell housing with the GM pattern for BW T10. The input shaft is different in length, spline count and pilot bearing. There may be other differences as well. You may be able to find adapter kits or the early Studebaker T10 GM bellhousing.

Since I can't edit, keep in mind that the 4spd transmissions have a 1:1 final drive in 4th gear. You would lose any overdrive benefits.

As mentioned above, anything can be made to fit anything, given sufficient fettling skills. If one can find the '61-'62 GM pattern Studebaker bellhousing, the Muncie transmission will bolt up, but as mentioned, everything else, bearing retainer OD, input shaft length and spline, pilot bearing, throwout bearing ID, are all different.

IMHO, seems like a lot of trouble for little gain. Maybe go with a floor shifter for the 3 speed?

Don't forget that you need to dial in another bell housing to boot.
