  • Transmission / Overdrive: Avanti automatic trans shift rod

I am in the process of rebuilding my Avanti automatic shifter and have run across an issue. The shift rod (part number 1557319) I received from Studebaker International is about 3 inches shorter than the rod that was in the car, please see attached picture. I looked in vain to find the proper length of this rod in the parts and workshop manuals along with a google search and search of this site. Does anyone know the proper length of this rod? Thanks for your help, Tom

That issue about Length would Never have come up before, because the Rod on the Car would always work and correct Part Numbers are used for ordering.

If I had to guess, I'd say that most likely the Rods got mixed up or pulled wrong, as the Floor Location would be different from Hawk to Lark Type to Avanti, meaning 3 different Rod Lengths.

What is wrong with the Original ?

I think you are right, someone put the wrong part number on the bag holding the rod SI sent me. The original rod is fine and I will be cleaning it up and reusing it. I originally ordered a new rod just in case in the disassembly process the original was damaged, thankfully that did not happen.
I posted the question on length because as I have worked on this car I have discovered the previous owner had done some creative work on this car in some areas and I wanted to make sure of the correct measurement. Also the rod I received from SI has the correct part number although as I know now it is the mislabeled. All the other parts I ordered from them for the shifter are correct.
The rod for an Avanti is 19.5 inches BTW.
      Thanks for the reply,
      Tom

Got my shifter all painted and reassembled with some new parts and new rubber. I used high temp black paint and did the back up switch in white, the starter cut out in red for easy identification in the future. Also painted the shift rod yellow to make it easier to see under the car when it comes time to attach it to the transmission. All the new screws and bolts are stainless steel . Since all of the original studs broke during disassembly they have been replaced with stainless steel bolts. The cut outs in the cover that fits over this is large enough to accommodate the bolt heads which is nice.

        Another step closer...
