  • Electrical: 1951 convertible top motor wiring

trying to get wiring for convertible top connected correctly. my motor has 4 wires coming out of it . the wiring diagram is not very specific. one is the ground. the others are red, black and green. there are only two wires from the switch. can anyone help?

Gene, welcome to the SDC Forum.
Attached are pictures of what I believe to be a '51 - '52 convertible top motor disassembled. My original motor was lost when the rebuilder was in a terrible motorcycle accident. (editorial: don't let people you like ride them dang motorsicles)

Your comment about your motor having four wires doesn't make sense. The picture shows the three wires, one for ground and the two from the switch. The two wires on the back of the windings are for the brushes.

Aside: It was the late great Ingvar Vik who convinced me to not put the top motor back into our car. He said the top should be put up and down manually so that if one of the hinges started binding, you would know immediately. Those top frame hinges are not readily available and should be preserved.

thanks for the advice. the shop manual shows three wire set up like what you have. the wiring diagram shows a 4 wire motor. I think raising it manually is the way to go. I have heard of other convertible owners having major problems when the mechanics malfunction.

Sure enough, the wiring diagram shows 4 lines coming out of the top motor.

Putting the top up and down without the motor does take two people but probably is safer for the hinges.

If you haven't put a top on the frame yet, ask on the forum before you do. I wish we had found thinner fabric so it would fold more easily.

Actually there is only two wires coming from the switch to the terminal block by the motor, a black and a green. The other two are already there.
