  • Steering: Power Steering pump noises after rebuilt on Right Hand turns.

    Hi Guys,
I changed the leaky seals in the power steering pump on my 63 Daytona hardtop a few years ago.

There is plenty of fluid in the reservoir.

When I do a right turn, I can get a light buzzing sound from the pump. At first I thought it was low on fluid, but that's not the case.

I am just wondering when I had it apart, if I installed the impeller the wrong way around ?

It wasn't making that noise before I had it apart.

    Any advice would be great.

    Thanks

Haven't you driven it since the Repair a few years ago?

It is possible that the Steering Arm Stops are Maxed out too soon, especially if you are near full Right.
The Tie Rod adjustments can fix that.

Was an Alignment done on the Front End since you drove it last?

      Hi Rich,
no this happens at a bout a half or full turn of the wheel when driving normally, so it's nowhere near the stops or steering box end of travel.

Yes I did have a full front end alignment after I had the front end apart and the car drives straight and true.

Of course, the real solution is not to make any right hand turns! You can still get there if you make enough left turns!

Both UPS and FEDEX ask their drivers to avoid left turns where possible.

It also could be some trapped air.

I agree. That would be the most likely reason. The other possibility would be mis-adjustment of the control valve, or a weak spring in the control valve.
