  • Rear Axle: Dana 2211 and T-90 Transmission Questions

OK, A quick look through my truck shop manual and I see the T-90 transmission is commonly used in Champ trucks. I've heard of the T-90 and was wondering strength wise how does it compare to say a T-86? Now the Dana 2211, I am not familiar with the differential is it comparable with a Dana 44? Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Joe

Where did you come up with this Dana 2211? never heard of that one.
I think Some Jeeps have Dana 35's with smaller engines, than those needing a 44.

Studes. have Dana Model 23, 27 or 44.
The model 44's were used in the 1/2 Ton Trucks from the "Big Three".

All Stude. V8 Trucks from 1956 to 1964 use T-89 lower geared version of the H.D. T-85, the Cases still say: "T-85" as do the T-90 Cases say: T-86

Only a Dana for or from a Stude. will have the correctly spaced Spring Brackets and Track width.

But I can tell you that the Borg Warner T-96 is a very weak Transmission for low power Engines like a Champion Six with 80 to 118 HP.

The T-86 and the Truck Version T-90 are Medium Duty stronger Transmissions.
The T-85/T-89 are the Heavy Duty/higher HP Units, they do not have a Top Cover like the Others, they have a left Side Cover.

Rich I hadn't heard of the 2211 either, but in the Truck shop manual I have (2E-8E series) it clearly lists a Spicer 2211 as the differential for 1/2 trucks. I just assumed it was similar to or a variation of the Dana 44. Any thoughts?

Take a look at the lower, right web flat on the back of the differential case..... You should see the raised number (e.g. 41,44). What year truck ? Unlikely to be non - 44 unless there was a swap way back...

I'm not talking about about an actual truck. Just wondering why the shop manual lists the 1/2 ton Champ trucks as having a Dana-Spicer 2211 rear axle. A Dana 44 isn't even mentioned in the shop manual, although Dana 60's are listed for 3/4 Champs. Any thoughts?

Can you postpicture of shop manual page? Spicer 2211 sounds like it may be the yoke.

I don't know how to post pics on here, but it's in the general specifications section of the 2E-8E truck shop manual ( a recent reprint if that matters). When I asked this question I had wondered if this was a misprint in the shop manual. As soon as read your post that it may be a yoke, that makes alot of sense, it does sound like a spicer yoke number.

The Chassis Parts Catalog on Cars or Parts Catalog on Trucks, is the BEST place to get accurate Parts info, Shop Manuals are not for that purpose.

They give you valuable info on the Parts Identification, Names and sequence of Assembly, when you end up with a pile of Parts and wonder How to put it together, you'll appreciate it!

Irish is correct. I can confirm that the 2E-8E truck shop manual shows the half-ton rear axles as Spicer Model 2211. Never noticed that before. My 3R shop manual shows the same axle as a Spicer model 44. I think I had/have an earlier version of the truck shop manual, and if I can find it, will check to see what it says.
