  • Fuel System: 1990 Avanti Sedan Fuel pump problems

    Hi guys,
today a 1990 Avanti Sedan rocked into my garage here in the UK. It's no 84 in the build and an all black car.

The car has 58k original miles on it but has been sitting since 2013

When I start my 1988 Avanti, I can hear the electric fuel pump get the petrol up.

On this 1990 car, I do not hear that noise and I am sure that it is fuel injected.

Do any of you have experience with an electric fuel pump making some clicking noise on 1989 and 1990 Avanti's and what they need for a start after a long time sitting???

    Regards

A fuel injected car of that vintage would usually have a rotary fuel pump submerged in the gas tank. It will not make the same ticking noise that the exterior fuel pump for carbureted car would make. You may hear a soft whirring noise, or it may be silent.

A standard culprit is the pump itself, or the fuel pump relay; the device that turns the pump on.

Do you have a shop manual or a wiring diagram for the Avanti?

      Roy-
No such thing as a shop manual for an Avanti II. There are some wiring diagrams floating around for the earlier cars, but in this case, a 1990 Chevy Caprice manual would come closest.

Thanks Skip. Would a 1990 Caprice have a fuel pump submerged inside the gas tank?

The pumps I have experienced seem to fail around 70K - 100K miles. That's only a small sampling size, though.

          Guys,
thanks for the tip. I am sure the petrol tank has to come out for this to be checked as I am sure the pump is in the tank.

I have a set of Chevy manuals for my 88 Avanti, so I am sure there never was a manual for the Avanti's.

It's been sitting so long it probably needs to be checked, and I am sure a failed pump is the problem.
I may check first by letting off the fuel line at the front of the car and trying that to spray fuel everywhere....

Yes. Throttle body injection on big Chevys beginning in 1989. (The 1988 models may have been the last carbureted American car.)

              Greg-
I have a mint-condition 1990 big Chevy shop manual you can have for the postage. I believe the 89 and 90 models are pretty much identical mechanically, so this should apply to your new purchase even if the mechanicals are really 1989.
