What engine is in the truck?
What transmission is in the truck?
The T96 and T85 transmissions from cars have different bell housing mount patterns and input shafts, as well as taking different clutches. Neither one is likely to be a direct bolt in job.
It might be best all around to rebuild whatever transmission is in the truck.

The Car Transmissions in '58 and Newer had Long Tailshaft's for a slide-in one piece Driveshaft, not a Fixed Yoke like you have.
However IF this Champ is a 112" Short Wheelbase Truck, you might be able to figure out a Driveshaft Adapter/Yoke setup for a One Piece Shaft to use the T-86 Long Tail O.D. IF you have a V8 Engine.
With a 4.27 Axle Ratio, I am guessing that this Champ was originally a 6E7, V8 Truck.

Column shift; yes?
if so, (before going inside the trans) you might check out the 2 long shift rods that drop down off the column mounted shift box. When I first put my ‘41 Commander back on the road after rebuilding the engine & installing a long tail shaft T-86OD, it kept jumping out of 2d. Turns out one of those rods had gotten bent so that the 2 rods were rubbing. Straightened it and no more trouble. Never did figure out if the rubbing pulled it out of 2d, or whether it just kept 2d from fully engaging.
For that matter you ought to also adjust/align that shift box & its levers, etc per the shop manual.

Also, never underestimate the probability of an engine swap sometime in it's life. Unless you can confirm (through the build sheet)the original drivetrain, its probable the dial - in procedure was not followed for new installation. BTW, I had my 2R6 on a very nasty fishing road, backwoods. Jumped out of 1st gear on a nasty, big rock...! No noises after re-gearing

The CHAMP should be equipped with a T89 already, which is, arguably, the best transmission available for your truck. If popping outa 2nd gear, it likely has some internal problems, since that is very unusual even if the bell housing is misaligned with the engine. The T85 and T89 is a lot more forgiving of misalignment than T86 and most others. What I am saying, depending on your plans for the truck, it may be a good idea to rebuilt the T89, if it is still in the truck. Just a thought.

Have you checked your floorboards? If there is rot and they have dropped, which is a common problem with the T-cab, then your steering column and shift linkage are likely out of alignment and could be the problem. Ask me how I know. If this is the case, replace or repair your floor panels ASAP.Mike Davis

I have the t-90 in my Champ as well, and it had a similar issue. The synchronizer ring was worn, as were the blocking rings. I had never rebuilt a transmission before, but with a few on-line guides, it was easy. I found a dowel that was the right size right off the shelf for the mainshaft bearing installation, but other than that needed no specialized tools.Ron Dame
