  • Where is the VIN on a '51?

A policeman and I were trying to find the VIN on my 1951 Land Cruiser. We couldn't find it. He looked in the door stamp, nothing. He looked at the firewall nothing but a body stamp. Is it somewhere we wouldn't expect. Please help.

That would be the left front door latch post. It's the serial number tag.

Door Stamp? It is usually on the Driver door, REAR POST, slightly low, on '51's, (on later years, I think 1953 & on) they moved it to the forward post (pillar).

The law enforcement people should also have the info on the location of the "secret" serial number, the center of the rear crossmember flange, if all else fails! [:0]

The policeman looked right at the VIN in the door. It's hard to read but it's there. The only problem there was, it didn't match the Title. Now what do I do?

            DMV blues...

Possibly the registration title has the engine serial number. This was frequently done in the past. Check that.

Yes in Calif. and many States the Engine Number was used up to 1954 for a Vin. number.

If that matches you are good!

But if it had a unregistered engine change, it could be a problem, but I showed a copy of the original Production Order to prove the Serial number matched to the car with my Engine number and the DMV changed my Title to match the Serial Number.

I would think you could show a Production Order that proves the Engine number on the Title was installed in the same car bearing your Serial.
