  • Speedo / Tach / Gauges: Speedometer Repair or Rebuild recommendation

The Speedometer in my 1963 Studebaker GT Hawk R1 is frozen solid. Where is a recommended repair facility that can rebuild and calibrate it? Has anyone been able to free theirs up without sending it out?
    Thanks
    Robert

Check w/ your local Stude' chapter, one of the knowledgeable Stude' parts suppliers or a current issue of Hemmings. very likely to find a nearby (or by mail) repair source. They will need to know the transmission make/model and differential ratio plus rear tire size and outside diameter.

I have freed up several speedo. By where the cable hooks on, there is a small brass plug. remove and lube with oil. gently move the end where the cable hooks on back and forth until it frees up. hook a drill and spin it both ways. lube again. replace plug. Use WD 40 to start.

        Paul,
I was hopeful the someone had good success with a speedo shop and could recommend. We don’t have a Stude Chapter around here.

        Diesel Jim,
I have 2 1963 160 MPH speedometers and they’re both seized solid. No give/play/movement of any kind. When you say you have done several. Were they acting up or were any of them seized up solid? I have a good 120 MPH speedo and I can spin the brass at the end of the threaded shaft. I don’t think a pair of vise grips would turn the 160s.

They were froze up. One was a 56 Golden Hawk. A couple Champ . When they start chattering and squealing, lube them.
