Interior: 1962 GT Hawk seats

While perusing the 1962 Sales brochure for the Gran Turismo Hawk (the one with the all black cover) I noticed on the back page a rendering of a red interior. For purists, here is the question...is the piping on the seats gold or white? It does not appear to be red like the seats! Could this be an issue during judging?

That would be an interesting question as I asked at Indy. We were instructed to judge on CONDITION not necessarily on CORRECTNESS. Although I am one for originality and correctness I understood the task at hand and our team judged accordingly and as consistently as humanly possible!

I am confused! According to the judges manual, authenticity is judged then condition to match Studebaker quality. This is for stock vehicles in classes 1-6a and 7. Other classes are solely condition and held to a higher standard (show quality). I plan on having a car judged, and am more concerned with authenticity. If that is not the case, there is no point in me going!

Last I heard and Judged, in "Original" Classes, Originality Points were taken off for Wrong Items or Parts.

Quality/Condition Points were given for different areas, Like Interior, Body, Power Train etc.

About the Seat Piping, I do know that the "Different" (wider) Bucket Seats in '61's DID have a contrasting Color Piping: Chrome, however after that, All matched the Vinyl. You must be seeing a Reflection.

They used a different quality material on the piping, and it faded in the UV of the sunlight. Many replace or reupholster them in the faded look of the brown or goldish which is totally incorrect. If the interior is red the piping should also be red.

I've owned several 1962 Hawks that had original interiors including one that my father bought new and including the one I have now that I bought from the original owner with the original interior and none of them had different color piping on the seats. If I remember correctly different color piping wasn't an option in 1962. That being said, the original vinyl seats in the 1962 Hawk's started to split after they were only a few years old so I would think that any of the 62 Hawks still on the road have had their interiors replaced by now so they could be what someone decided they wanted that looked good to them. Interesting that the ad lists the oil filter as standard. My 62 didn't have one other than the aftermarket toilet paper variety.

Don't Ya think that it was probably removed for a "Better" Filter; a "Frantz Oil Cleaner".
How a '59 Year Old Car was Built, is not likely how it currently IS.

That's true, a lot can happen in its life. I did go back to a spin on though.

My white '62 GT Ermine White/Green still has its original interior everywhere except the front seat inserts, which were replaced with a thick, metallic teal vinyl. All the piping matches the original vinyl.
