  • Fuel System: 650 cfm carb too big?

    Hello,
I am looking for a good 4 barrel carb to put on my 259 v8. I had a guy recommended me the edelbrock 1906 carb but that has 650 cfm! I feel like that is way to big for this engine. Can someone help verify this or give me any recommendations? I just need a reliable carb. This is not going to be a high hp car. Just looking for something that will make good power all around.
let me know what you guys think!

Drop it on and go. Minimal tuning needed.

    IMO, 650 cfm is too much/too big. I suggest a 450 - 500 cfm for a regular use 259 cid.

I bought my 56 P-Hawk with a 600 Edelbrock. My 259 has a cam, bigger valves, Caddy valve springs, 60 over (so a 268 maybe), 9 to 1, Avanti exhaust manifold, and easily revs past 5,000 RPM. I turned a 17.75 at 80mph at Samoa Drag Strip a few months ago. I get 16 -18 mpg around town and 25 on hwy. 3 speed w/OD, and 3.73. It has very nice power throughout the rev range. But I also have a 500 CFM that I have been meaning to install for a comparison.
One thing to keep in mind, typically the primaries on 4Vs are quite small so if you stay out of the secondaries, a carb that is too big may run just fine, but you may loose full throttle acceleration when "pedal is to the metal"... or "pedal to the rust" as the case may be".
I have a nice 1/4 mile hill near my place that I use for comparison runs. Its long enough to get a good pull but steep enough to keep my speed reasonable.

Yes to all above views - Even the 600 is marginal for the larger 289 - Definitely go w/ the 500/electric or smaller Stude OEM Carter.

My brother ran a 600 Edelbrock on his 289 for several years and it was okay. He and I both use 500 CFM versions now and he is happier with the change.

RE: post #6 - Yes the 600 cfm will work fine, IF properly tuned and getted and not concerned about easy start off-the-line. With the larger carb. all is "fussier".

Always bears mentioning, the same CFM Edlebrock carbs are often available with "Performance" richer jetting and "Economy" leaner jetting versions.

Other choice is to go with EFI TBI, more money but benefits over carb. Will only use what you need to keep the mixture correct so CFM is pretty much not an issue. I have been running a 625 cfm AFB on my R1 with R2+ cam and it runs very well, but on a 259 650 is way over size.
