  • Fuel System: Gas tank needs replacing

I have a 1963 studebaker lark 6 cylinder . I’m trying to restore it and the gas tank is pitted in spots , don’t really want to get it redone . So I was wondering if there was another gas tank similar to use ? The gas tank from studebaker international was 699.00 when they continued to make them . As of right now they are not making them . So I was leaning towards something easier to get . Thank you for your help again .

Why don't you want to get it redone? Or redo it yourself?
I'm driving three: a '51, '53 and '56; all with tanks I have resealed with several different products, one of them over 25 years.

It's only a matter of time before Stephen Allen has them reproduced.

I didn’t think resealing it would seal the holes that are pitted in the tank around the gas neck and the fuel pump area . That would be a lot cheaper then to buy one I guess . Thank you for your input

Even large holes can be sealed with Permatex® Fuel Tank Repair, a two part putty; then seal the inside with any of the kits from Red-kote, Caswell or Eastwood.
Just keep the tank moving to coat the entire interior as the mix cures and solidifies; and blow air in to the fuel pickup line to keep it from getting sealed shut.
        They all come with instructions.

I have sealed leaky gas tanks while they were leaking with JB Weld Tank Weld. It took me a few tries each time. Put it on the leak, keep putting pressure on it for 5 minutes. Then it should have stopped 90% of it. Apply more. Usually takes me three tries to stop it all while it is leaking.
If you can do it dry, it works 1st time.

I think the "Fuel Pump Area" you are seeing is the Fuel Gauge Sending Unit.

My fuel gauge sending unit was leaking. On a Hawk, there are actually a few gallons above it when tank is full. I carefully cut out a gasket, used some type of gasket glue (forgot which) to stop it. After fixing a leak with the JB Weld and still smelling gas, I removed the tank, gently pressurized it, did the soapy water thing, found several more leaks and patched them. Its all good now.
I've never been very concerned about a bit of rust in a tank. Changing a filter every few years is easier than the internal gas tank sealer.

A cautionary note. NEVER use JB Quick Weld to repair a gas tank. It won't hold. The regular takes a day to set up stuff works pretty well. , tho.

I've taken two gas tanks (1961 Hawk and 1964 Ford Fairlane) to a radiator shop in Omaha, they tanked them(both were NASTY inside with dried varnish) and then sealed the units. It cost $175 each time.

Yes I looked into the local radiator shop and I was quoted 500 base price and was told that was where it started and could be up to 1,000 .

If fixing yours does not work, I have a good used tank to fit 62-66 sedans I would sell

I just cannot believe the price!!!! I actually answered a question that you didn't ask sorry I can't give you a lead on a fuel tank that would "fit" that is affordable. There is a company that will repair your tank (I think they cut out the bad places and repair etc) but I have forgotten the name I would normally check my copy of Hemmings Motor news because I am sure they are listed there.
One last thought...you might try an older auto parts business (the kind that existed in the 60's) that has real books....there is a chance they may have pictures and dimensions of all of the gas tanks in a paper catalog.
                    sorry I wasn't more help.

Thinking perhaps of Gas Tank Renu?
