  • Brakes: Brakes

Good morning folks could use a little help.
IM working on my 50 landcruzer and for the life of me can't get the back brake drum off. I tryed a 3 arm puller and it took a chunk out of the drum trying .
What's the trick to remove it
    Thanks

A three-arm puller that is bolted to the lugs is the only way to remove a brake drum. I can't find a pic of one right now, but they are on ebay (search for brake drum puller).

What Dwight said. But search for "hub puller". The rear brake drums on most Studebakers are permanently fixed onto the tapered axle hub that carries the lug bolts. You need to remove the large center nut, reverse it, and screw on until flush with the end of the axle (to protect the axle threads). Then you fasten the arms of a hub puller to three of the studs using the lug nuts, and alternately beat on the knobs of the puller's striking wrench with a BFH, and beat on the head of the puller screw itself. It takes a lot of force.

Buy a shop manual. The procedure is in it.

BTW, there is a good chance that you have ruined the drum by warping it.

Godr....I am sure the drum is ruined since he pulled a chunk out of it. Your advise to buy a shop manual is a good start to working on Studebakers. They are a must have for us shade tree mechanics.

Click image for larger version Name:	hub puller.jpg Views:	0 Size:	7.2 KB ID:	1914515You can usually rent this from parts suppliers or equipment renters. And remember, it is a HUB PULLER, not a drum puller.

Here's the best price I found with a quick check on eBay.

I really don't see how a 3 arm Hub Puller can break a Drum.

You can try spraying a Penetrating Lubricant between the Hub and Axle, be SURE the E-Brake Adjustment is quite loose and adjust the (2) Brake Shoe Adjustment Eccentrics all the way loose.

Rich - He simply said "a 3 arm puller". I assume that he was using a drum puller and not a hub puller.

Well that would be too bad, since that could NEVER work.
