  • Electrical: Need wiring diagram for 6-volt, positive ground Stewart Warner Model 760 tach

    Need simple, clear wiring diagram for six-volt, positive-ground Stewart-Warner Model 760 tachometer which runs off the sending switch going beneath the distributor cap.

    Please, no later 12-volt, negative ground.

    Need this yesterday. Thanks.

    So this Must be for ONLY a 6 Volt '55 President Speedster, no wonder you can't find one.
    There is No mention of a Tachometer in the 1955 Shop Manual and no Tachometer Wiring Diagram.

    Since there is a Plug on the Dash Unit and the connecting "Cable", it should be Plug and Play, the Lighting goes to the Instrument Light Switch, there should be No other Power required.

    I believe the "Signal Generator" under the Dist. Cap is actually Non-Electrical System powered, so that the Voltage would not matter.

    The 536834 Distributor Drive Unit Assy.'s are all the same 1955 to 1958 for all 6 and 12 Volt Cars, so the above COULD be true!

        Thank you, gentlemen. All Autolite 8-cylinder distributors use the same sending unit, 762J. Meanwhile, anyone know the first year these Model 760 tachometers appeared? Mine reads to 4,500 rpm. Also, mine works so don't want to rock the boat, but is it a good idea to try to coax some high-grade lubricant like Tri Flow (link below) into at least the bottom barrel, the one closer to the bottom of the steering column? These are steering column mounted affairs, if you've ever seen one. They used a different letter suffix for sending units for 6-cylinder Autolite, 8-cylinder Delco, and 6-cyl. Delco distributors. Am guessing they have wee oilite bearings within, but after 70 or so years, might be parched.

          So it appears that you are dealing with a Tach. Sender for an Autolite Dist. and an Aftermarket Steering Column mounted one at that!

          1955 Speedsters and Golden Hawks (except the '56J Packard powered) all used the Delco Setup. Apples to Oranges.

          So you are not even talking about ANYTHING Studebaker at all, just Aftermarket, so our help is useless.

            Yep, must be an older Mopar. I do have the installation instructions for your tach. There should only be two wires and they connect exactly like it says in the service bulletin I sent. I definitely wouldn't inject any lubricant into any part of the tach or sender. Leave that to an instrument man.
            The SW instructions I mentioned are dated 6-53. They could even be older than that, I don't know.

              Because i use the same distributor cap and rotor as Chrysler, i'm able to use this tach. Meanwhile, if any of you can divine the very first year the Stewart-Warner Model 760 appeared, would love to know!
              Since Pierce-Arrow and Packard not strangers to Studebaker, and someone mentioned seeing a wiring diagram from a Stude source online but couldn't re-find it, thought y'all might know. This is in my '47 Super Clipper Model 2103 with overdrive. Years ago had a '40 One-Twenty w/ OD with a rare Packard accessory tach which came out in '39, as option to demonstrate the efficacy of the new for '39 overdrive.
              It replaced the clock in the glovebox door, ran off the generator a la T-series MG or early Corvette.
              Thanks again. Hah, "instrument man." The last such shop in the entire Bay Area is no longer conversant with Stewart-Warner, referred me to shops in Ohio and Colorado.

                As a former owner of a 10 th series Standard Eight Packard limo I would love to see some pic's of your Super Clipper . You could PM me so we don't tie up the Studebaker 'thing' folks .

                On my high school driver, my Austin Healey, also had the generator tach drive, it was a neat trouble free design.
