  • Fuel System: 6 volt fuel pump

My Airtex 6volt fuel pump finally gave up after 12 years of running. I am hearing all types of bad things about Airtex. Is there another 6volt pump you would recommend for a 1955 259 v8

Are you talking about a mechanical fuel pump, or an electrical one?

Except for the super powerful and/or supercharged engines, the mechanical fuel pumps for a V-8 are the same from 55 to 64. The mechanical fuel pumps do not have a 6 volt or 12 volt designation.

I would have thought by saying 6 volt that would indicate an electrical pump

I recently installed this pump from Summit Racing:

Carter Universal Rotary Vane Electric Fuel Pumps P4259

Not cheap at 85 bucks but is a quality unit. Mines in stalled in '48 Commander and mounted to the frame just forward of the rear axle on the driver's side. I added a fuel pressure regulator to keep the carb pressure at 4psi. Click image for larger version

          Which regulator did you use?

The pump in post #4 is a very nice unit . I have used it in several 6V cars that I have serviced including a 27 Nash where the original style pump is very unreliable and finicky . Works great and can be reliably regulated down to very low pressures for old carbs . The cheap Airtex units are not worth the hassle and lack of reliability that almost always go with the low price .

My Airtex electric quit after six years - Ran it dry when the gas tank ran dry while the gage still showed an eighth left (there are at least a couple lessons here). Not the pumps fault, the instructions emphasize not running the pump dry (another lesson).

Got the pump installed this weekend along with the Holley regulator. It all went together nicely and works great. The pump is a bit noisey though. Will probably get some rubber mounts to better isolate it.

I installed rubber isolation mounts against the frame and on all of the bolts which eliminated a lot of the noise from the pump but it still does make itself heard but after the engine is running I don't notice it. This is shown in the picture on post #4.

I just installed this pump on my '47 M16. No modification to the mounting. I can barely hear it before starting the engine. Approx $50 at O'Reillys . I didn't put a gauge on it, does anyone know the running pressure on this pump?

The pump pressure runs around 7 PSI so make sure you put a regulator on it and keep it down to 4-5 PSI max for regular driving on the street. I have mine set at 3.5 for the '48 Commander.
