  • Fuel System: Best single barrel carburetor for dual carb set up

I need suggestions for the best carburetors for a dual manifold 185 six. Using a pair of bbr1s now but there may be better carbs out there. Any experience would be greatly appreciated.

What carburetors are working right on your dual carb setup for a Champion 185?

I don't know about two of-em, but on a 54 4dr.that I bought, someone put a larger single on the flathead in the car. I recall it having s GM on it somewhere.

I do know that the engine looks like it was actually rebuilt under a shade tree, BUT...it will run circles around the engine in my "other" wagon. Note the throttle bore is a little larger than the original. The original installer made a half-assed tapered adapter. Some time back I had the carburetor for some reason. I spent some time "fixing" the adapter. The throttle linkage fits as is should, It had no air filter when I bought the car, so I don't know if the factory filter will fit. I put an aftermarket paper filter on it.

Anyway, I'll go out and look tomorrow for any identifying numbers on it.

I've used the Holley 1904 single barrel carb in several multi carb arrangements on many different engines and it's always worked well. They come in a few different throttle plate sizes, so be aware of this if you decide to use them, it may make a difference depending on the type of linkage you use, re progressive or not. Here's an old pic from several decades ago of three of them on a 200ci six in my Model T . This engine came from the factory with only one of them, but after "hopping it up" it needed all three to run. I have used more them on other engines.

Thanks Rick, I believe a Holley might be the better choice of what’s available out there.

Does anyone have experience with the Holley repops available from several sources on the net?

I don't have any experiance with the repops, but these are very simple carbs and easy to rebuild. I haven't been to a swap meet in over a year (no swaps due to covid) but I pick them up for $2 - $5 at swap meets. I know Daytona parts co. sells a repop they call a CVH "universal carb". for around $350. A friend used one of their Zenith repops and has been happy with it.

The 185 in my Champion coupe had twin carters on it. They were OE carbs from a 53/54 Champion. They were linked parallel, not progressive. It ran well. I think the small holleys would have worked better.

Coincidentally, I ran across a stash of the Holley 1904s. Now, all I need is an intake manifold.

I think he has several of the 1 -9/16" throttle bores for $50 each; seems high, but maybe a bargain when one considers the repops are $339.

If I remember correctly the bore on Rowans manifold is only 1-5/16", It Sounds like he would also need an adapter , Ed, The carb linkage builder !

Can't find any info if one computer will drive two TBIs, but if it requires two complete setups, figure $2,000 - $2,500 to get them running. Who'll be the first CASO to spring for it?
