  • Engine: Engine ID number help

Can anyone decipher these engine numbers and determine what engines they are. I don't have pics at the moment.

Those may be casting numbers, and if so, may have been used for more than one engine type. The later 6 cylinder engines have a serial number stamped on the left side of the block, near the top front. The location of coding of V8 engines are discussed here:

Yes, those are casting numbers. 1548965 is a 1959-60 170 engine. 199193 is an older Commander 226 engine, about 1947-48. Look for the serial number here.......

        Thanks Dwain & Skip,
My intent is to purchase/replace engine parts that were stolen off my stock '48 M15A-20. From what I've learned from you guy's and Bo Markham the bolt patterns on the block remained the same over the years and only the things you hang on it were different for cars vs trucks etc. Just want to confirm that the 1548965-7 Head & Intake/Exhaust manifolds will bolt up. Also (but least important) the distributor, generator & starter.

Some compatability, true, but in other areas the early and late 170's are like two different engines. In 1958 the block got several modifications. Larger main bearings mean that oil pans, gaskets, rear main seal, and front/rear engine plates do not interchange.

Good information, thanks. Sounds like too much risk to persue a post '58 to satisfy '48 needs so I told the seller I'm no longer interested.

              Mark,

I have a couple of those early champion sixes. One was rebuilt just before the truck was scraped.

Thanks Bo, I remember you said you had some. After we spoke a guy reached out to me from AZ after hearing I was looking for parts. He said he had some engines but none turned out to be early 169.5. Not to worried about it until I pick up my truck and assess what components are actually missing.

Engine numbers are usually stamped on a machined pad on the top left front corner of the block. Engines with an H prefix are normally Commander 6, earlier 226 cu in displacement, later 246. Original (US) engine numbers are all digits -- could that B really be an 8? The fact that it's on a plate might indicate that it's a replacement engine. Alternatively, given your location, maybe the B means it was intended for export.

If the Exhaust Manifold has the "Hump" Up shape front and Rear and is basically square, it's a Commander 226 or 245 larger Six, if the Intake & Exhaust Manifold runners are rounded and level it is a Champion small Six 169 c.i.d.

Here is a 1949 Commander Land Cruiser Engine, with a Dual Carb. Modification, same block and similar manifolds as a Truck You can see the "Hump Up" clearly.

The block casting number and the date code identify this as a 1938 Commander engine. As Skip said, the 'B' suffix might mean made for export. A photo of that plate would be nice. What is the casting number on the cylinder head?
This must be a big truck, not a pickup.

Since it's a 226 he probably has a M17 since they were export only.
