  • Brakes: 63 GT Hawk Turner Brake Caliper Question

    Hello,

I have a 1963 GT Hawk with a Turner disk brake kit. I recently had brakes and suspension worked on extensively. I posted the attached picture of the brakes to a Studebaker Facebook page and one of the people said the calipers are on the wrong side creating a dangerous situation. My mechanic disagrees. Can you tell me if this looks right or wrong?

I attached a picture and here is the post from the person who thinks it is dangerous:
YIKES! I hope my eyes are playing tricks on me. Are those Turner disc brake calipers mounted forward of the king pins? If so, it is wrong, and you MUST swap them left to right, and in rear of the king pins. If not, the calipers will kiss the frame when steering hard left or right, and will collapse the caliper pistons enough for the pedal to go to the floor for 2-3 pumps. Do not leave the driveway if the calipers are mounted in front of the king pins!!!

Thank you so much for your help

    Hello,
I am glad you came here for further info. Here is a link that will be helpful. Please read it in its entirety, and decide from there. In a nutshell, if your Turner disc brake calipers are mounted in front of the king pins, instead of behind, you will experience the same problem as the original poster in the attached link. This is what properly installed Turners should look like: Click image for larger version Name:	retrievephoto-25_6_orig.jpeg Views:	0 Size:	68.7 KB ID:	1827199

Here are Jim Turner's installation instructions for his disc brake kit, with pix to clearly show how to mount the calipers. If your mechanic still doesn't understand, he can also call JT direct:instructions.html

CampbelHawk: I think one reason for the confusion may be that the original factory supplied Bendix/Dunlop disc brake calipers were indeed mounted in front of the king pins. However, the calipers in the Turner disk brake kit are not. The Turner calipers are designed to be mounted BEHIND the king pins.

CampbellHawk, after looking at your additional pix, I am happy to say yours are installed correctly. With the pic you provided over on FB, it appeared to have been mounted forward of the king pin. Again, happy to say I was wrong.

Mr Hall. Thank you very much for the response. The car has had lots done to it over the years, so I would not have been surprised if it had been incorrect and I apricate very much the fact you were looking out for my safety. Thank you again--I am relieved.
