Has anyone rebuilt Knee action Shocks?
I have read in the repair manual how but what is real experience doing it? Is it as easy as it sounds?

Hi Al,

Yes, you can take them apart easily enough. But rebuilding them involves having the 'parts' to replace any damaged or worn parts. The problem is having the 'parts'.

OTOH the question is how you have determined they actually need rebuilding? If they were dry/low on fluid then cleaning them out and refilling may be all that is needed. That's just a messy task but one about anyone can do on a bench top. Cleaned and refilled those on my '50 Commander and it made a world of difference.

People say use hydraulic jack and other fluids. I obtained the proper fluids from: FIVE POINTS CLASSIC. AUTO SHOCKS PH: 714-979-0451 for a few bucks and would rather use the proper stuff. They also sell some parts. They rebuild too.

Hi Al,

IIRC I put some clean new shock fluid in the shocks, closed them, operated the arm a few times and then drained them. I did not think mine were very dirty inside and just wanted the 50+ year old fluid out. I would be leary of using parts cleaner. These are closed units and if they have crud in them it may be time to consider rebuilt units.
