  • oil use

    Hi,
For my 61 lark 6 cylinder I have the following question:
I rebuilt it in 1999. Since then I put 4300 miles on it!! It still uses some oil, is this ok? What amount of miles are needed for regular rings to seat?
The engine was completely redone all new bearings, etc., etc. Pistons and rings are regular and not over. Compression is ok, oil pressure great, no leaks. A mechanic told me because there was not much use in nine years, the piston walls probably have a glaze on them. Does this sound right?
I would appreciate any suggestions and type and weight of oil to use. Are lack of zink issues a problem for a 6 cylinder?
Thanks. (PS the cars runs great and is extremely quiet and smooth).
I plan tot drive this car many miles and I don't want to add a quart at every stop!!

Dave: When I was rebuilding my Champ truck engine, a former Stude mechanic came by and said when they rebuilt them back in the dealership they took them out on the freeway and drove 70 mph for 10-15 minutes before delivery....that was to break-in the rings...I don't know if I would follow that exact advise (and I did not), but I think your problem is rings.....Drive it some more...a little harder too...!

Yes David you need the ZDDP in your oil just as ALL flat tappet engines do. There are many alternatives to accompolish that, the posts are found using search word: ZDDP.

Also try driving 25-35 and floor it to 55 for a while and back down to 35 MPH.
