  • Electric Windshield Wiper Repair

My daughter's 62 Hawk can't get its state inspection until I repair the wipers. When the power switch is turned on, the wipers do not operate and the circuit breaker cuts out.

My question is whether there is something that can be done without removing the motor... looking at the repair manual it seems like a bear to remove! The car has the underdash mount A/C, so its in the way of removing the wiper motor. THe wipers worked 3-4 years ago before I sent the car for body and paint repair (yeah, I finally had to get the car from the guy and have someone else finish it.) I'm thinking that perhaps I could remove the back plate on the motor and perhaps get the armature to turn or loosen. Any thoughts from anyone??

That happened to me once in an Avanti. As it wound up, the gear housing was cracked. I'm not sure the damage was caused by the motor twisting until something that was binding gave out or what.
In your situation, it can't be ruled out that the gears have become encrusted with hardened grease, similar to power window motors and won't turn any longer. There are parts under the screw-on cap where the wires are attached that can break and fall into the gears..

The only thing that would cause a breaker to trip is an overload or a broken wire grounding the motor.
I'd pull the gear housing cap and check that first
