Spare tire in a '57 Packard wagon

I just found out that a 225/75x15 tire doesn't fit in the spare tire well. RATS! Anyway, what do you wagon guys do, just leave it in the back on the spare tire cover?

Haven't got that far yet but a maybe tire may be an option. A maybe tire is one of those small throw aways. Many years ago when I was young we called them Maybe tires as in maybe it will make it maybe it will not!

I know several people that use those small temporary spares in their Studebakers. I am talking about the small high pressure type, not the inflatable type. A friend has one in his Avanti just to give more storage room. Some new cars no longer come with any spare.

Temporary spares from late-model RWD Furds and Chisylers have that 5 on 4 1/2 pattern, and they are narrow enough to fit any wheelwell. I have 4 of them on my project, for rollers.

I guess it's a little too late to tell you, that you should be running no more than P205X75R15 or P215X75R15's and you would not have that problem!

The wagons had 7.60x15's originally. The 225's are the equivalent.

The Stude. Parts Catalog in the speedo. pinion chart, shows 57L having 7.10X15 tires =P215X75R15. They do have 15X 5.5 in. wide rims though, the widest rim on any Stude. or Stude/Packard.

The '58 Packards use 7.50/8.00 X14 tires on 5.5" X 14 Rims.

It does say 7.10 there, but that's the only place it says that. All other listings that I can find show a 7.60x15. I suspect they were going to use a 7.10 and changed it, or that's a misprint.

The 1957 Salesmen's Data Book shows 6.70X15 standard and 7.10X15 optional for a Broadmoor. I can't imagine the 1957 Packard wagon having anything larger than a 7.10X15 standard. 1957 Studebaker brochure PD 1012 lists 6.7X15 standard for V8s except for the Classic which has 7.10X15 standard. The 1958 Salesmen's Data Book lists 8.00X14 tires standard for the Packard wagon with no options available (like 7.10X15 for a Provincial wagon).

The 1957 supplemental workshop book lists 7.60's, as does the promotional booklet I have.
