  • Anyone modded a 2bbl air cleaner for 4bbl?

I've got an offer of an NOS 2bbl '59-'50 air cleaner, and have heard the suggestion about modifying these to fit 4bbl carbs (I've got a WCFB). Has anyone here done this? Do you have any advice, instructions or photos? I don't want to spend money or butcher up something NOS if it won't really work...

Clark, Lionel is just up the 5 to the 101 in the valley. He's two minutes off the freeway. Good cruise on a weekend. He does a good job on those for WCFB's and larger.

I modified a 2 bbl air cleaner to go on a new AFB for my 52 ragtop. The center needs to be cut out at the flat area, a new "base made flat plate on botton of air cleaner, then a tube the sid=ze of the carb welded to the flat base. I used 2 part epoxy to secure them, then used 2 part seam sealer to be sure the seam was sealed. I then drilled several 7/8" holes on the botton (outside the filter element so that the carb could get more air. I used 3/16" plate, WAY TOO HEAVY, sheet metal will do fine. If I remember correctly, I had to raise up the lip about an inch.

If anybody is interested in some phots, let me know.

I wanted to keep the "stock" look of the air cleaner when I switched from the 2-bbl. to the Edelbrock. I made a ring out of 12 ga. steel and cut out the bottom of the air cleaner to match. Before brazing in the ring, I drilled extra holes outside of the air filter. It was necessary to make the ring long enough to clear the linkage and the choke housing. I finished the brazed joint with 2-part epoxy to provide a good seal and add some support to it.

It sounds like you two Jims followed much the same plan. About how tall do you figure the "ring" is? Looks like somewhere in the neighborbood of 2" - 2.5" in the photo.

                    Clark,

Your eyeball is well calibrated! The ring is 2-1/4" high. Since the bottom of the air cleaner is tapered, I centered the ring and brazed it in place before cutting the old center out. I then cut the hole slightly undersized so that I could peen the base over the inside of the ring. I pressed a "dimple" in the bottom of the ring (matching the Edelbrock) to keep the air cleaner from rotating and chafing the radiator hose. I had to move the snorkel to the other side because of my A/C mounting.
