  • Flightomatic speedometer gear

My speedometer stopped working a few weeks ago. Yesterday I found the cable & gear at the end of the cable was ok, but the drive gear inside the trans appears to be free wheeling. The shop manual calls for a "drive ball", so I guess this is the thing that must have fallen out. Anyone come into this problem & is it a big job to remedy? Its on my 60 Lark V-8 automatic.

With the car on jackstands or a hoist; drain some transmission fluid out, remove driveshaft, next remove the bolts that hold the extension to the case, tap housing with rubber or plastic hammer to break loose and remove housing. You may find: broken drive gear,or possibly broken retaining clip[snapring.]. A trip to your local transmission shop for a extension housing gasket , same as ford FMX, if you need a new speedo drive gear S.I. may be able to help, possibly an older trans shop too. Warren; all of Lou's suggestions sound good... all but the getting in there to do it! [:0] On a "X" member equipped '60 Convertible, I would think it would require Trans. removal.

I replaced the trans in my 62 ragtop (since sold) it was easier (without a hoist) to pull the front dog house as a unit and then pull the motor and trans! Pulled it apart on Friday night, was driving it Sunday afternoon, with a freshly rebuilt trans, made as mess in the garage, but, saved time. (IMHO)
Besides, I do not think the tail housing will come off without disassembling the trans.
